Lesson detail

The subjunctive in real opinions

2 May 2026 · B2 · grammar lesson · Mood, doubt and nuance

Lesson summary

A consolidation lesson on the present subjunctive after necessity, doubt, emotion, judgement and concession.

The focus was not memorising every form in isolation, but recognising when the speaker is presenting a fact and when they are expressing stance, doubt or judgement. We compared reliable triggers such as il faut que and bien que with more nuanced cases like je pense que versus je ne pense pas que.

Key learning outcomes

  • Use the subjunctive after il faut que when a new subject follows.
  • Treat bien que as a reliable subjunctive trigger.
  • Contrast affirmative opinion with negative or doubtful opinion.
