A conversation lesson on how friendships form, how social groups work and how to describe affinity naturally.
We worked on vocabulary for friendship and social codes, especially expressions that do not translate word-for-word from English. The lesson distinguished ami, camarade and more contextual descriptions of affinity, with a correction around the false friend sympathiser.

A false friend: usually not 'to sympathise' in English.

Less intimate than ami; often tied to school, politics or a shared setting.

Dans la cour de récréation, les groupes se forment très vite.
In the playground, groups form very quickly.
Relationship verbs such as s'entendre avec and se ressembler often express reciprocal meaning, so the reflexive pronoun is part of the structure.
Ils se ressemblent par leur humour, pas par leur caractère. — They are alike in their humour, not in their personality.
Common mistake: Je entends bien avec lui.
Correction: Je m'entends bien avec lui.

More precise and elegant than simply se faire un ami in reflective discussion.
Il faut du temps pour nouer une vraie amitié.
It takes time to form a real friendship.

Literal: to have hooked atoms
Natural for immediate social, romantic or intellectual affinity.
On a tout de suite eu des atomes crochus.
We clicked straight away.
s'entendre avec
to get on with
A useful reciprocal/reflexive verb for describing relationships without overusing aimer bien.
Je m'entends bien avec mes collègues, même si on se voit peu.
I get on well with my colleagues, even though we do not see each other much.
Translate naturally: We clicked straight away.
Correct the false friend: Je sympathise avec ton problème.
